Returns a child element named 'app' that identifies the active application, in the same format as 'query/apps'. This command is accessed using an HTTP GET. Returns a map of all the channels installed on the Roku device paired with their application ID. Once you have the Roku device IP address, you can issue the following external control service commands to the Roku device. The external control services provided by ECP are included in a simple RESTful API accessed using HTTP on port 8060. It is safe to assume the unit is no longer available if you have not received a new NOTIFY message before the Cache-Control max-age time expires. Roku devices multicast NOTIFY messages periodically (approximately every 20 minutes). That means that, for example, the Location header may begin with either "Location:" or "LOCATION:" or "location:", and so forth. When parsing headers in the response, in accordance with the UPnP Device Architecture specification, field names should not be treated as case sensitive. We recommend you let the user assign names to the USNs. Your program could keep a map of USNs to location URLs, and allow the user to select which Roku device on the network to control. Note that if there are multiple Roku devices in your local area network, you will get multiple responses.

The Roku device serial number is contained in the USN line after uuid:roku:ecp. You can parse out the URL for the Roku device external control services from the Location header. If you get a 200 status response, the Location header is valid.
To query for a Roku device IP address, send the following HTTP request to 239.255.255.250 port 1900: The Roku device responds to M-SEARCH queries on this IP address and port. There is a standard SSDP multicast address and port (239.255.255.250:1900) used for local area network communication. Roku devices advertise their external control services using the multicast SSDP so that programs can discover the IP address of Roku devices in the area. SSDP is an industry IETF standard network protocol for discovery of local area network services. ECP is a simple RESTful API that can be accessed by programs in virtually any programming environment. The Roku devices offering these external control services are discoverable using SSDP (Simple Service Discovery Protocol). The External Control Protocol (ECP) enables a Roku device to be controlled over a local area network by providing a number of external control services.

I want this to evolve to a lot more useful app, I'm trying my best to get there in my free time. Playback / error handling is extremely basic and just there to help you play some file directly on Roku.
You can play video files from internet / local network to which you have a qualified URL and is of supported format. You well get the installation link from this Chrome app.

Please note this is a private Roku channel and you'll have to install it like any private Roku channel. You will have to install the companion Roku app on your device. I've added some basic URL play functionality. Chrome app remembers last found Roku so it will be less painful after the a successful discovery. For some reasons beyond my comprehension, despite of being on same network as that of Roku's chrome app may not be able to discover Roku, try giving it another shot after a reboot / wifi adapter reset. VPN on computer may prevent chrome app to discover Roku.ģ. Make sure your Roku and computer are on same networkĢ. In other words its not that user friendly yet.ġ. Remote is straightforward but the URL player thing, Its not for everyone. This app needs a absolute URL to a video ,if you are planning to paste / hulu in the box hoping it will show that webpage on Roku, that's not the case. NOTE: Since Google has dropped the ball on supporting Chrome Desktop application I've abandoned this project, I wont be supporting this anymore, you can continue to use it at its current state without any expectation of new features or bugs getting fixed. Any accessible URL to supported Roku video format should work. Play a video URL on your Roku player from this app.
